HOW TO CHOOSE A SURVIVAL KNIFE?

The survival knife is an essential item for survivalists, hunters, adventurers, and more generally for all outdoor enthusiasts such as bushcraft practitioners. Due to its versatility, it is important to consider the purpose of the knife and its characteristics before making a choice. There are many general categories of survival: combat, wilderness, urban, sea, jungle, mountain, desert, medical, emergency, etc. Therefore, there are knives specifically adapted to each of these survival categories. Consequently, a person must define the type of use they want to get from a survival knife. Nevertheless, there are basic characteristics that define a good survival knife.

• 1. The size

The size of the survival knife is important to consider. Indeed, a knife that is too large will be of no help when it comes to performing detailed tasks such as cutting small traps and skinning game. It could also be too heavy to carry after a while, becoming more of an obstacle than a tool. A small knife, on the other hand, will not be of much use when it comes to batoning or cutting wood. It is generally accepted that the ideal size for a survival knife is between 9 and 11 inches, or 22.86 cm and 27.94 cm in total length.

• 2. The fixed blade

Certainly, folding knives are very practical and handy, and you don't have to worry about having a sheath when carrying one. However, folding knives have a joint - the point where the two pieces of the knife meet - which can be a disadvantage. You are more likely to break the knife, especially if you are performing difficult tasks such as hammering or batoning. Obviously, you don't want to lose your most important survival tool. A fixed blade knife, on the other hand, is a solid piece of metal (without a joint), therefore reliable and very robust. It is certainly more suitable for heavy outdoor tasks.

• 3. Full tang

This is a blade that extends to the base of the handle. It means you have a solid, continuous piece of metal. This is extremely important for several reasons. First, the knife will be much stronger and more reliable, especially when performing heavy tasks. You won't have to worry about it breaking. Second, if the plastic or rubber scales were to fall apart, you would still have the metal underneath to serve as a handle. Third, the knife is more balanced because the weight of the metal is distributed over the entire knife.

• 4. The blade design

A survival knife can have a straight edge, which allows it to be versatile overall. It will perform well when cutting wood, carving traps, or skinning game. However, some blades are serrated or at least partially serrated, not only for aesthetics but also to increase cutting efficiency. Since a survival knife may need to make both push cuts and slicing cuts, a reasonable option is to have a partially serrated blade.
