Defense pens

A defense pen follows the form factor of a writing pen: 14 to 16 cm long, 12 to 15 mm in diameter, 40 to 90 g. The body is machined from anodized 6061 or 7075 aeronautical aluminum, sometimes stainless steel or titanium for the heaviest versions. Knurling, deep grooves, or a textured coating ensure a secure grip, even with gloves.

Construction and maintenance

The rear end often features a tungsten carbide or hardened steel tip, which also serves as a glass breaker. The cap screws on or snaps on and exposes a standard-format ink refill, frequently Parker-type, replaceable without tools. A steel clip allows carry in a shirt pocket, on a bag strap, or in an organizer. Maintenance is limited to cleaning the threads, periodically tightening the cap, and replacing the cartridge. These items rank among the most compact personal defense tools.
