Defense weapon

Weapons are divided into 4 categories in France, namely A — B — C — D. defense weapons are classified in category D. Note that a category D weapon must not be lethal. They will simply serve to neutralize an assailant or to defend against an attack. However, since it remains a weapon, even an anti-aggression one, its use can cause more or less serious injuries.

Defense weapon: the legislation

According to the law, weapons classified in category D can be acquired and possessed freely by adults over 18 years old. On the other hand, carrying and transporting them are strictly prohibited except for legitimate reasons.

In case of control, the weapon holder must be able to provide a valid reason for possession at the risk of committing an offense. It is the competent authorities (law enforcement) who will assess whether the reason is valid or not. For this, they will take into account several factors such as the place, the potential danger, the context of the control, etc.

Defense weapon: the different types

There are 3 main types of defense weapons, notably:

  • Electric weapons such as taser, shocker, electric baton.
  • Tear gas weapons such as defense sprays, guardian angel, tear gas pistol, etc.
  • Striking weapons such as telescopic baton, stick, tonfa, brass knuckles, rather oriented towards security professionals.
