LED flashlights

A flashlight is chosen first on beam shape: deep smooth reflector to project a spot beam to 200 m and beyond, short reflector or TIR lens for a wide flood that illuminates a room or a trail. The stated lumens mean nothing alone; you need to read the range in meters, the intensity in candelas, and the runtime curve, often reduced to a few minutes on turbo before thermal step-down.

Batteries, water resistance, and ergonomics

An 18650 or 21700 battery with USB-C charging powers the majority of pocket formats; CR123A batteries remain useful for storage over several years, and AA batteries for a backup model. A type III hard-anodized 6061 aluminum body withstands impacts, and an IPX8 rating allows submersion. Check the selector (dual-action tail switch, rotating ring), the reversible clip, the anti-roll feature, and the magnetic tail cap.
