Steel suited to bushcraft knives
There are three categories of steel on the market:
Carbon steel
This is a high carbon steel. Although it is sensitive to salt and corrosion, the carbon steel of bushcraft knives offers excellent resistance making it practically indestructible. On a bushcraft knife, this type of steel makes sharpening easier.
Stainless steel
This is a steel that combines chrome and carbon, resistant to corrosion. Stainless steel is more difficult to sharpen. Furthermore, it is less resistant to impact. A stainless steel bushcraft knife is better suited in a saline, humid environment requiring little maintenance.
Tool steel
This type of steel is not immune to corrosion. However, it is more resistant to rust and can be used for heavy-duty work. Not to mention that it is easy to sharpen.
What handle for a bushcraft knife?
A bushcraft knife requires a solid handle with a good grip. For this type of knife, there are three material choices for the handle: G10, rubber or micarta.
