Lights and portable lighting
Portable lighting is judged on three figures: output in lumens, beam range in meters, and runtime on the mode actually used. A LED light of 200 to 500 lumens is sufficient for walking, camping, or close-up work; beyond 1,000 lumens, the beam is mainly used to identify a distant detail. A smooth reflector concentrates a tight spot, while a textured reflector or diffuser widens the flood.
Power, water resistance, and modes
The power format guides the purchase: rechargeable 18650 or 21700 battery with USB-C for everyday use, CR123A lithium battery for long-term storage, AA and AAA for emergency resupply anywhere. An IPX4 rating covers rain, IPX7 temporary submersion. Then there are eco, medium, turbo, and strobe modes, last-level memory, and red lighting. Headlamps free both hands, while flashlights prioritize throw and grip.
