Nunchakus

Nunchakus

A nunchaku consists of two sections of 28 to 32 cm connected by a cord or chain of 8 to 15 cm. Traditional sections are turned from dense wood — red oak, beech, ash, or oiled exotic wood — with a cylindrical or octagonal profile and a diameter of 25 to 32 mm. Polypropylene and anodized aluminum versions, unaffected by moisture, are used for demonstrations and repeated training sessions.

Connections, training models, and maintenance

The connection using braided nylon cord remains flexible and quiet; the link chain, mounted on a swivel or ball bearing, rotates more freely and facilitates wrapping techniques. Training models in EVA foam on a flexible core, very lightweight, are used in karate, Okinawan kobudo, and martial arts schools for learning forms. Wood maintenance involves light sanding followed by linseed oil; the cord should be replaced as soon as it starts to fray. These martial arts pieces sit alongside the other personal defense equipment.
