Personal defense
Personal defense equipment covers compact objects designed for everyday carry, in a pocket, a bag, or on a keyring. Formats range from a 13 cm rod to a telescopic baton exceeding 50 cm when extended, with weights from a few dozen grams to nearly 600 g. The dominant materials are anodized aeronautical aluminum, hardened steel, reinforced ABS polymer, and grip rubber.
Selection criteria
Bulk and activation method guide the selection: pull pin on personal alarms, push button on electronic models, safety cap on defense sprays, inertia deployment on batons. Electronic devices add a power constraint: button cells, 9 V battery, or USB-rechargeable lithium accumulator. The carry system — clip, carabiner, nylon belt-loop holster — determines accessibility. Maintenance remains light: dry wipe, periodic battery check, and monitoring of aerosol expiry dates.
