Kubotans

A kubotan is a cylindrical rod 13 to 15 cm long and 13 to 16 mm in diameter, weighing 40 to 90 g. Anodized aluminum dominates, followed by reinforced polymer, brass, and, more rarely, turned wood. The surface features transverse grooves, knurling, or flat facets that improve grip; the ends are flat, rounded, or finished with a conical tip.

Variants, carry, and maintenance

A broken ring or a carabiner fitted at the end turns the object into a keychain, which explains its compact size and integration into a key ring. Some hollow versions hold an ink refill, a glass-breaker tip, or a sealed compartment closed by an O-ring. Flat-profile variants slip into a trouser pocket, while clip models attach to a belt or pocket edge. Maintenance is limited to wiping and checking the ring, the most stressed component.
