A Fixed blade knife cannot close when you don't want it to. They offer greater safety of use than pocket knives. This is why you should always opt for fixed blade knives for the most demanding tasks. Think of survival situations, but also industrial purposes. In these cases, a fixed blade knife could be your best option.
