THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF HUNTING KNIVES

If you've recently discovered the world of hunting and have become a great enthusiast like me, this article is for you. Let's start with the basics, a hunting knife is a knife used during hunting to prepare game for consumption. This includes skinning the animal and cutting the meat. The hunting dagger is traditionally used to kill wild game. Some hunting knives are suitable for other uses in nature, they can serve as a machete or hatchet for hunters when these specific tools are not available. In this case, their function is similar to that of a survival knife. There are many shapes of hunting knives, (I was a bit lost myself at first!) but rest assured, you'll be able to distinguish them quite quickly. Today, take the first step by discovering the different types of hunting knives that you'll be using to perfect your hunting trips.

THE BUCK KNIFE

The buck knife or multipurpose knife has been my favorite ally since I started hunting. As its name suggests, this multifunctional knife can be used for cutting, slicing, skinning, or even deboning game. Very practical, it will save you from having to carry several knives. You'll find different models of buck knives, fixed or folding. It's also sold at an affordable price.

THE BOWIE KNIFE

The Bowie knife is a classic among hunters. It's named after its creator, James Bowie. This knife features a fixed blade with an upswept point, ranging from 10 to 30 cm in length. It has a bone handle. You'll use it to easily field dress your game. Due to its high resistance and hardness, as well as its ease of use, it's my favorite and accompanies me every time I go hunting.

THE GUTTING KNIFE

This knife is one of the essentials if you want to field dress your game like a true pro! When I use it, I first use its point to open the animal, then I use its blade to remove the organs without damaging them. Removing the viscera is essential, and I advise you to master the gutting process well, as the viscera can develop microbes. I also use it to prepare fish, and it's very effective!

THE BONING KNIFE

As its name suggests, this knife is designed to separate meat from bones. I advise you to always have it with you, as it's truly irreplaceable. It has a thick, rigid, and shorter blade.

THE HUNTING DAGGER OR KNIFE

Also called a drop point knife, the hunting dagger has a thin and long blade used to pierce the game (especially the heart), without destroying the skin, meat, and organs. I particularly appreciate it for its ease of use. It's perfect for beginners.

THE SKINNER OR SKINNING KNIFE

This is a fixed blade knife designed for cutting the skin of game. It features a thin, sharp blade with a highly sharpened upswept tip to prevent the skin from tearing.

Another type of skinning knife is specially designed to cut the head and shoulder of the animal (for trophies). It's also called a caping knife.

I always advise taking a fixed hunting knife which is easier to use and more robust. It's easier to maintain compared to folding knives which tend to accumulate pieces of meat...

Furthermore, pay attention to the length of the blade, especially if you're a beginner. The longer the blade, the more difficult it is to handle, whether for skinning, cutting, or removing skin and bones. The ideal is to try the knife at the time of purchase to see which one you'll be most comfortable with.
